The Mixing Desk is constructed from a wood and leather writing desk, mounted with two spinning wax cylinders, each of which contains six music tracks. Specific tracks from the cylinders can be selected for playback using two gate valves on the front of the desk. Audio projection is achieved using two directional gramophone horns.
The wax cylinders are controlled by moving a number of cogs around on the control surface of the table. These allow tracks to be played interchangeably and cross-faded to produce seamless audio playback. The tracks played by the mixing desk are modern compositions, but ones which have been recorded by a string quartet to endow them with a vintage quality.
